The direct coupling of mechanical forces in polymers to covalent chemical reactions has opened new opportunities in chemical reactivity, stress-responsive materials, and mechanochemically active soft devices. This talk will describe how some simple concepts, including fundamental physical organic principles that are familiar to chemists, are manifested in an ever-developing mechanophore toolbox. Connections between molecular reactivity and physical behaviors that can literally be felt by the human hand will be presented.
